Günther Uecker, *1930 in Wendorf near Crivitz, Germany lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany and St. Gallen, Switzerland

Günther Ueckers is considered one of the most important German painters and object artists, who is also active in stage design and film. As early as the late 1950s, Uecker created his first “Nagelbilder”. He entered into an exchange with Group ZERO, especially with Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. This is followed by an occupation with light media, optical phenomena, electricity, structural sequences and kinetic approaches. Uecker opens up the visual process for the viewer by allowing motorized or manual interventions. With the inclusion of natural materials, such as sand and water, his later spatial concepts develop into an interplay of light, space, movement and time. A high point in Günther Uecker’s artistic career is the spatial intervention in the prayer room of the Reichstag in Berlin, completed in 2000.
