Brigitte Kowanz, *1957 -† 2022, lived and worked in Vienna.

In the 1980s, Brigitte Kowanz pioneered in the cross-media approach. She combined and redefined media art and sculpture with technical and scientific methods. A throughly poetic approach to light and space, information and codes, is the central element of her multifaced oeuvre. Scattered on surfaces into the multiple or infinity, or captured in fixed formations, light became a metaphor for Brigitte Kowanz in the search for a visionary representation of visible reality. Because of her groundbreaking work, the artist has received international and national recognition and was honored with Austrian highest award, the Great Austrian State Prize for Art, in 2009. In 2017 her work was presented at the Austrian pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
