Martha Jungwirth occupies a prominent position in contemporary Austrian painting with her poetic and abstract watercolors and oil paintings.
Throughout her artistic career, Jungwirth has cultivated a distinctive approach to abstraction deeply rooted in bodily perceptions and the world around her. She characterizes her intuitive painting process as an adventure that transcends recognizable images, existing before spoken language and memory. Her works convey a profound sense of self, serving as a personal diary that draws from her experiences, travels, art history, Greek mythology, and political events. Jungwirth captures these diverse themes using paint and watercolor, employing a vivid palette that includes fleshy pinks, blood reds, and bruised magentas. Her creative process involves direct physical engagement, leaving behind traces like finger marks, scratches, and shoeprints as visceral records of her artistic journey.
Martha Jungwirth, born in 1940 in Vienna, Austria, lives and works in Vienna and Neumarkt an der Raab. She attended the Academy for Applied Arts in Vienna, where she later taught from 1967 to 1977.
