Nick Oberthaler, *1981 in Bad Ischl, lives and works in Vienna and Hamburg.

Nick Oberthaler’s clear, almost technoid visual language deals with image theory, scientific essays, or current political issues. The result is a conceptual body of work consisting of a combination of text, image and graphic elements in the style of Hard-Edge Painting. Complementary colors often catch the eye and address the interplay of attraction and repulsion. Besides canvas, the preferred image carrier of Nick Oberthaler is paper, since the artistic trace of ink, pastel, gouache, or watercolor remains inextinguishable and requires particularly nuanced techniques. Within this perfection, however, certain disturbing elements are generated, which Nick Oberthaler uses to further open up the picture’s space.
